Here we are, once again into the breach my friend. We are fully ensconced into the holiday season here. A little late this year because of the time of Thanksgiving, right? Thanksgiving really late in the month. I mean obviously we know it's like the fourth or...
Niles
0:01:12
It's always the fourth week, the fourth Thursday.
Bijon
0:01:16
That's the nature of the calendar, it just falls, you know, right up against
Niles
0:01:20
the beginning of December. Yeah, well by the time this airs, so for the folks that may not know, this is pre-taped. And this is the night before, I'm sorry, the morning, we're in the morning.
Bijon
0:01:32
The night before Thanksgiving.
Niles
0:01:38
It's Wednesday around 10 a.m. a little after Pacific time here. Bijan's in Boston. So we're getting prepared for Thanksgiving tomorrow, right? And by the time this airs, we hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Bijon
0:01:59
And didn't hurt yourself too much on the Black Friday sales extravaganza. Hopefully none of you were camped out next to a Best Buy or something like that.
Niles
0:02:09
Yeah, that's... I won't get started. That's a weird thing. That's a weird... that's weird.
Bijon
0:02:15
That's just not for me.
Niles
0:02:19
Yeah.
Bijon
0:02:19
But, we are ensconced in the holiday season, wrapping stuff up for the year, chance to once again reflect on the amazing year that was 2024. Have a great year this year.
Niles
0:02:31
Yeah, it seemed to move pretty quick, which is not cool, but I was like, all right. Yeah, because you did quite a few things this year, right? Well, you kind of have your little
Bijon
0:02:43
schedule every year now, for the most part. I do. The relationships I've built over the years, things like the Jazz Cruise, and there's a few things I do with Jazz at Lincoln Center that happen around the same time every year that I get called to participate in as an educator, mentor, performer type So yeah, those things happen and of course, you know, being a professor now. Yep, got that scheduled. Yeah, so there's definitely a lot of things that happen on a regular basis, but there's always room for some change in the action.
Niles
0:03:25
Well and you have your trade shows that you kind of seem to, you know. Right, the conferences I hit, yes.
Bijon
0:03:31
I've got the network and Midwest Clinic, which definitely, each year I get a little bit more involved in. International Trumpet Guild, yeah.
Bijon
0:03:44
Yeah.
Bijon
0:03:45
All that.
Niles
0:03:46
The ITG, yep, of course.
Bijon
0:03:48
Look at you!
Niles
0:03:49
You've been around, you've been around. No, all I'm doing. You don't know what that means, you've got all kinds of stuff that you have to deal with too.
Bijon
0:04:07
You'd just rather not speak on it.
Niles
0:04:09
You know me though, I'm a walking contradiction. It's like a thing I do. You know, I think Sting said it best. It's part of your charm. Sting said it best years ago. Contradiction is proof that you're thinking. So I'll buy it. He was selling that one at one point in an interview. I'm like, all right, it's trash, but I'll buy it. I'll buy that line. Yeah, I'll buy it.
Bijon
0:04:33
It's fine.
Bijon
0:04:34
Fair enough.
Music
0:04:35
You know.
Bijon
0:04:36
But in all seriousness, though, you know, definitely wrapping stuff up, as entrepreneurs and business owners that we are, you know, it's that time of year as well to shut things down for a moment and regroup, evaluate, etc.
Niles
0:04:57
Yeah, all that.
Bijon
0:04:59
All that. And we are in the midst of that as well, which is cool. But at least we hope that we learn from things in the past and make it a little bit easier the next time. So I think we're a little more prepared this year.
Niles
0:05:15
I think. I would say for me personally, right now, I've been going into a deep dive of just a lot of being grateful. A lot of gratefulness going on. You know, just thinking about things in my life. Some things go as you plan, some things don't, but either way, at the end of the day, I've got my health. I've got the love of my friends, and it's like, that's the most important.
Both
0:05:43
I love you, man. I love you, man. I love you, man. I love you, man.
Bijon
0:05:47
I love you, man. And we also are going to have our annual holiday dinner, or our annual dinner that we have. We are.
Laughter
0:05:55

Laughter
0:06:00

Niles
0:06:01
We go out, yeah.
Bijon
0:06:02
Big old, big old tomahawks. We haven't picked a steakhouse this year, but we have a couple of choices we're going to hit. And really indulge and have a nice bottle of wine and debrief, decompress a little bit. Maybe even a stogie, a nice cigar. Yeah, you might have a stick, a night stick.
Niles
0:06:28
Right? All about it. Let's do some adulting. What was that scotch
Bijon
0:06:35
when you were here last, when we did the Smith Center show in September, we you introduced me to a nice scotch. It
Niles
0:06:47
was the Macallan, the Macallan 12. You never thought you would drink scotch until you had that, the Macallan 12. Now you do. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's pretty smooth. It's nice. That I can imagine with a like you know 80s my clothes is like oh yeah the perfect so that's what we're gonna do yeah done and dusted yeah town little stick patio yep some people wonder how the heck do these guys know each other talking shop talking smack well it is kind of an interesting thing. Any time for years, when you and I, separately it's different, but when you and I are walking together into any venue, into any...
Niles
0:07:23
Yeah.
Niles
0:07:24
Live together.
Niles
0:07:26
It's...
Niles
0:07:28
It's...
Niles
0:07:29
We somehow turn heads. And there's an energy that you and I, I don't know, it's an extra confidence or it's an extra zing to the zang. I don't know what it is, but there's something there that people are like, who are these cats walking in?
Bijon
0:07:45
What's going on here?
Niles
0:07:46
You know, I'm like, well, you know, I don't know. But we're just, we just do what we do what we do. What we do.
Bijon
0:07:54
Do what we do.
Bijon
0:07:56
Yeah. No, but yeah, it's a good time. And we haven't gotten too cold out here in Boston. It's pretty Manageable right now. We're still in the 50s. Yeah Okay, yeah, you know so no snow no snow in the horizon. There's rain Wow cool. Yeah But we are but that I know okay, so you are the skier yeah When does that start for you? Do you have snow in the mountains yet?
Niles
0:08:27
So today I think it's snowing. And I think part of yesterday. The mountain, the local mountain here, technically opened like a week ago, but they're blowing snow. But when I looked at their live vid cam, I'm like, nope, I'm not rocking up my skis yet. I'll wait till fresh snow falls, you know, when they get a good solid base, at least 12-15 inch base. It should, technically the season, which is actually nice and earlier than it was last year, because we didn't really start skiing until the middle of December, late December, which was really strange. Because the year before, as we all know, it was a crazy snow season everywhere. But it's kicking up now. Mammoth is open up in central California and so in Colorado I've been getting, you know, I'm on these different, I get these different e-blasts from different snow ski resorts, so I see what's going on, but yeah man, I'm ready to go, I'm excited. Are your skis all tuned, ready to go? Funny you should mention, so nowadays, so look, you know this, but like I said, I worked in the ski industry for years as a kid, right? So seven, I think I think we well, I do you were at you were in a sport Shelley Yeah, I was at a place called Alta ski and sport for seven or eight. You were at the ski spot Yeah for seven or eight years section, but you were at the ski spot Yeah, we are full-on and I worked as a ski tech for years and then certified binding tech, certified boot tech look at you, Rossignol, all of them. You know, I had to use the stone grinder you know just all that kind of so the other day I was looking like well maybe I'll just take my skis to REI and have them, you know and I'm looking at the price and I'm like no I'm like I'll go, I'll put it, no.
Bijon
0:10:25
You can't take it anywhere.
Niles
0:10:27
And you're not gonna do as good a job as I can anyway, but unless I needed the grindstone or you put it on the machine, that's something different. But I'm like, yeah, I'll buy the vise. I've already got my ski wax and iron and everything else and my, you know, my sharpening tools for the edges. So I'm like.
Bijon
0:10:46
You got room in the garage to do that.
Niles
0:10:48
Oh yeah, I'll put it on the workbench. Yeah, and feel much better about it anyway, because it takes me back I mean my favorite smell in the world is ski wax Something about going into a ski shop and you smell that it's like well probably cuz it was like You know is my first job. I mean I was there from I was 16 years old to I was 24 maybe Something in there. Yeah. You know. So anyway, so to answer the long way of answering your question, yes, no, I have not got them tuned up yet, but I will be in the next week or so. But yeah, but very excited to get to get things going. Well, I think we should move on to some music. We should tell our listeners that we have this theme that we're going to do today and run through. This was a last minute idea. I don't know how we stumbled upon it. Me going off on some tangent, of course, is where it stemmed. But we're going to do a Jingle Bells theme from three different artists. One being Diana Krall, which is B. John recorded on that, however many years ago that was. And then...
Bijon
0:11:58
20 years ago now.
Niles
0:12:00
Was it?
Bijon
0:12:01
Yeah.
Niles
0:12:02
Wow.
Bijon
0:12:03
Recorded summer of 05. Wow. I know this because that's the year I got married.
Niles
0:12:07
Okay. Yeah. Don't tell Shannon that, dude. He can't just remember that from that, you know what I mean? She knows. We're going to play you a Brian Setzer version of Jingle Bells by the lovely Dean Martin. I love him because he had that whole, you know, sound drunk thing all the time. Loved it. Nailed it. Well, it kind of to me gives it a little bit more of a, I don't know, just a hint of laughter. Because you know, me and Christmas songs and these people doing covers of Christmas songs bums me out. It's just campy. Unlike the original versions. It's just not my thing. Everybody's a caricature of what they think it is. I can't stand it. And you're saying, well what about Boobly? I'm like, hmm. But because he sounds the way he sounds, I'm like, all right, there's at least-
Bijon
0:13:19
It's less notrived.
Niles
0:13:21
Yeah, yeah.
Bijon
0:13:23
That's what it is.
Niles
0:13:24
And the Brian Setzer thing, you know what it's gonna be. It's just, for our listeners, it's gonna be a full-on blues, rockabilly version, which is fun, and I'm all about it, but anyway, let's get into your, let's start with your Diana Krall. Why don't you go ahead and introduce it.
Bijon
0:13:39
Alright, so this is an album we recorded with Diana Krall, Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra playing Jingle Bells. You're listening to B-Side Morning Brew with Beej and Niles on 91.5 KUNV, jazz and more.

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Oh, the fields we go laughing all the way. Bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright. Oh, what fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Now the ground is white, go it while you're young. Take the girls tonight and sing the same song. Just a bit of Bobtail Bay. 240 as his speed. They can hit you too and open sleigh and crack you'll take the lead. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Hey! Jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh I'm just crazy about horses. Welcome back. You're listening to B-Side Morning Brew with Beej and Niles here on 91.5 KUNV Jazz and And that was Jingle Bells by Diana Krall.
Niles
0:17:01
With B. John Watson on it. I know, but you know, it's, whatever, adopted it, whatever you want to call it. We were talking off air about what we're doing for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Well, those that are listening, what we did a couple days ago. But I'm preparing, you know, I'm, as you said, it's like, oh, you're doing your infamous apple pies, homemade apple pies. Yes. Apple pies, homemade apple pies. Yes, but I'm also diving into a chocolate mousse pie. Whoa, that is a departure for you. I know, I'm doing both. Okay, all right, you got to do the apple. I got the recipe, you know, YouTube's got everything, so I looked at the recipe and I, you know, got out the chocolate, the milk chocolate, and the marshmallows, and the, you know, the whipped cream, or the whipping cream, and all that. I'm looking forward to actually making this thing. It looks like it's fun to make, quite honestly. I just can't wait to dive in.
Niles
0:18:07
It's awesome.
Niles
0:18:08
Yeah, and having people here at the house, so I wanted to try to mix it up a little bit. And of course, you know me, I love Thanksgiving meals, my absolute favorite. So I'm doing the whole everything, the bird, the homemade, what do you call it, stuffing, all that kind of good stuff.
Niles
0:18:27
I like chopping.
Bijon
0:18:28
Cornbread or cornbread stuffing or regular stuffing?
Niles
0:18:31
You know, that I haven't tried. I'm doing traditional. So it was my mother's recipe from years ago. So I take that and I change it up a little bit every year though, you know what I mean? Try to make it my own. And then I stuff the turkey with it and then put some on the side when the turkey's, you know what I mean, in a different oven dish. How about you?
Bijon
0:18:52
Yeah, Shannon's going in, yeah, well, doing three pies we're going to have. Apple crumb, crumb apple pie. A little crumb, crumb, yeah.
Niles
0:19:06
Yeah, so at the end you can get your fork and kind of mash it on the crumbs on the plate. Get those last bits of crumbs.
Bijon
0:19:12
There'll be some whipped cream and ice cream to go with it. That's good stuff, bro. And then pumpkin pie.
Niles
0:19:18
A little pumpkin pie.
Bijon
0:19:21
And then...
Niles
0:19:22
Do you put any walnuts in it? No.
Niles
0:19:28
In the pumpkin?
Bijon
0:19:29
Okay. But she is making a bourbon pecan pie.
Niles
0:19:33
Oh, pecan is what I was looking for, not walnut. Yeah, pecan pie. Take it easy, bourbon, but go buy.
Bijon
0:19:40
And then my mom's making four cheese macaroni and cheese. All right. I'm making my Brussels sprouts with bacon, crispy bacon. Yep.
Both
0:19:50
Nope.
Niles
0:19:51
And you lost me there.
Bijon
0:19:54
Carrots, twice whipped potatoes.
Niles
0:19:57
Okay.
Bijon
0:19:58
Shannon makes homemade cranberries, like not cranberry sauce, but just like cranberries. Yeah, they're delicious. Yeah. And I'm gonna get, we're having turkey. Yeah. And then I think I'm gonna get a honey baked ham too. Okay, see now to me, the ham thing,
Niles
0:20:19
I associate more with Christmas. Or Easter, yeah. But I'm, and Easter, yeah. But I'm with you.
Bijon
0:20:30
And then the Hawaiian sweet rolls, you know, so we have some leftovers, stuff like that. But my brother's probably, my brother's in town, so we're gonna come over and watch some football beforehand so I might get a little charcuterie board going.
Niles
0:20:41
Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's funny when Ashley comes over tomorrow, I was talking about, you know, like getting some biscuits. She's like, you know, why don't I make homemade biscuits? I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Niles
0:20:54
You can do that?
Niles
0:20:54
That's not tough? She's like, oh, it's super easy. I'm like, oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Because I'm all about those little Hawaiian soft.
Bijon
0:21:02
Yeah, but the homemade biscuits, well, that's the best.
Niles
0:21:04
I'm with you on those, because those are my fave. But yeah, when she said homemade, I'm like, oh, OK. All right. I'm sold on that. So yeah, so yeah, all that. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna be super bloated and salted up.
Laughter
0:21:20
Just like
Bijon
0:21:21
I'm yeah, I am gonna do my 72 hour fast. Yeah. Starting on Monday. Yeah, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, next week. Yeah.
Niles
0:21:30
Yeah, you kind of have to.
Bijon
0:21:37
It's like just, yeah.
Niles
0:21:38
Yeah.
Niles
0:21:39
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and to me, like, it starts in the morning, because I'll do an over-the-top, I make like a full-on breakfast. You know what I mean? With the leftover. No, no, I mean the day of making Thanksgiving meal.
Niles
0:21:50
Oh, oh, oh, yeah.
Niles
0:21:51
I do a whole big breakfast thing. Yeah. And then for this, I did do kind of what, to your point, like the charcuterie thing, but I've got instead, I bought some like maple glazed, you know, mixed nuts or like the pecans and the almonds and you know, that kind of thing. And then I've got some mixed cheeses and some crackers and things like that.
Bijon
0:22:11
Yeah, it's gonna be simple. It's just gonna be like that. The nuts, some cheese, crackers, and maybe some salami, maybe. But keep it simple.
Niles
0:22:21
Yeah, love it.
Bijon
0:22:23
It's gonna be exciting, looking forward to it.
Niles
0:22:24
Well, since we're on this happy-go-lucky note, let's move on to our next Jingle Bells version. Jingle Bells Retrospective. So for some of those that are listening to us, my new project is more rockabilly swing kind of thing. I guess more Stray Cats meets Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, that kind of thing. So I've been listening a lot to that music and having a blast doing so. So since we're on the Jingle Bells theme, I thought we'd play one of Bijon's favorite artists actually, which is the Brian Setzer Orchestra. You know, since Bijon comes from the purest of orchestras, I thought we'd play some Brian Setzer Orchestra. So this is Brian Setzer Orchestra. Yeah, he's a real deal, man. Doing his rockabilly version of Jingle Bells here on 91.5 KUNV Jazz and More. You're listening to B-Side Morning Brew with B.E.J. and Niles.

As part of our Jingle Bell retrospective today we just heard Brian Setzer version of Jingle Bells with his full horn band. And you know, a little rockabilly, rockin' fun, good time with Jingle Bells.

Niles

We wish all of you an amazing holiday season and extended blessings. I think we should wrap it up with yet another Jingle Bells tune. That's right. But this time it's from the late great Dean Martin. So we leave you with this folks. Here's Dean Martin singing Jingle Bells Jingle All the Way. Here on 91.5 KUNV Jazz and More. You're listening to
